App Design - NCT LIVE

Status:
Launched

I take pride in being the primary UI/UX Designer for NCT LIVE, a groundbreaking live stream platform integrated into the NCT Music Player App. Collaborating closely with project owners and developers from the Beijing office, my responsibilities included designing the user interface, developing diverse styles of popups, creating prototypes, and providing visual and animation assets. Grateful for the support from my design lead and a fellow graphic designer on my team, their assistance was instrumental in the successful completion of the design.

About project

In addition to offering music, NCT has also created a friendly environment by introducing the LIVE platform. This allows users to interact, share their musical interests, and build relationships with fellow music enthusiasts. Through live streaming, users can connect with one another, discuss their favorite genres, form friendships, and even send gifts to show appreciation for the host.

Basic functions and primary interfaces for the live stream were released a month ago in the first version. Currently, efforts are being directed toward adding more features, enhancing the existing ones, and improving the user interface and experience.

My responsibility

  • Collaborating on the product's needs, objectives, and strategies with the LIVE product team, which consists of product owners, project managers, and R&D.
  • Execute all visual design stages from concept to final hand-off to engineering; produce mock-ups, create prototypes, design 2D visual assets, develop animations, and create motion effects for LIVE platform (LIVE gifts, entrance effects, user's avatar frame, etc.)
  • Assisting developers through all the building process and responding to any queries
  • Create wireframes, storyboards, user flows, process flows and site maps to effectively communicate interaction and design ideas
  • Identifying any UI bugs in the test build and notifying the programmers / product owners of them.

SELF ASSESSMEENT

What I did well?

Given a big responsibility by my leader, I was tasked with studying, researching, and working through the entire design process. Despite the assurance of support from my leader whenever I encountered difficulties, I saw this as a challenge and an opportunity to work independently. Throughout the design process, I became a more diligent worker and felt excited every time I sat down at my computer to contribute my knowledge and skills to this feature. I was willing to work overtime to find solutions to current problems, but I make sure it doesn't affect my health.

Undoubtedly, I learned a lot from this feature design process. It was a unique feature that required me to consider different types of users (both from the anchor and user side) as well as the company's perspective. During the project, I gained insights into how other roles function in product development. I realized the significance of small UI elements in design, and how it is crucial to strike a balance between users and business needs. I particularly enjoy expanding my knowledge on animations and am proficient in using After Effects. Additionally, I honed my UI design skills and learned to use guidelines for the entire feature. I came to understand that designing is not just about fulfilling requirements, but also about anticipating potential problems and offering solutions that provide the best user experience.

What I would do differently?

The LIVE feature project has provided me with valuable insights, and I am committed to addressing my weaknesses in the upcoming sprints. Firstly, when I receive a large requirement with significant tasks, I need to estimate the time it will take to complete them and inform the product managers of my plan. I also need to communicate which tasks can be completed, which ones cannot, and why. It is not beneficial for me or the product development to attempt to complete all requirements within a time constraint, as this can lead to errors in the user experience. Secondly, I need to remain calm and confident when presenting my ideas, focusing on the situation and providing solutions rather than simply completing tasks. Thirdly, I must consider worst-case scenarios for user experience in order to create sensible and secure interfaces for all situations. Fourthly, I must balance the needs of the users and the business when making design decisions. Finally, I must pay careful attention to interface parameters and colors when designing and communicate any design updates to stakeholders in a timely manner.
