UI/UX Case Study
Coshare

Cosmetic review Mobile Application is the case study that my team with 4 members did during the UI/UX Web App Product Design. We finally finish the project with an 8.0 score and receive the Web/App Product Design Certificate from Keyframe Multimedia school after a long time of studying and working through all the night.

The Product

Coshare is a mobile app that caters to the interests of young college students and working individuals who are curious about cosmetics and skin care. The app offers reviews on various cosmetic products and informative content on skin care. Moreover, users can post their own reviews or ask questions related to cosmetics.

The Problem

The popularity and necessity of cosmetics and beauty products among young people have increased due to their effectiveness. However, those who are inexperienced in this field often struggle to determine which products are suitable for their skin and overall appearance. To address this issue, we aim to establish a community where individuals can share and receive information about cosmetics, as well as their personal experiences with beauty products available in the market.

The Goal

We aim to understand the requirements of the youth when it comes to using cosmetics, their preferences while purchasing cosmetics, and their expectations from cosmetic reviews. Based on these findings, we can develop effective beauty product applications that cater to their demands.

EMPATHIZE

Quantitative Research

We did an online survey with 21 questions by using Google Forms. A total of 62 people responded which assisted us in frame the problem correctly. Below are some results collected

==>Key Insights

According to the survey, the majority of cosmetic consumers are young females. The findings also revealed that people tend to watch cosmetic reviews to aid in their product selection before making a purchase. Cosmetics have become an integral part of our daily routine and are considered essential. However, many users struggle with selecting the most appropriate and effective products.

Qualitative Research

We interviewed 3 people ranging from 18 to 30 years of age to understand how cosmetics are essential to them, what problems they often face, and their thoughts about cosmetics review activities. Here are some sample questions from the survey:

==> Key insights

Knowing which cosmetics are popular and widely used brands is important to us. Customers prefer to try products in-store, read reviews, or consult with doctors to determine if a product is suitable for them. A good review should cover the pros and cons, price, main functions, skin types, ingredients, purchasing options, and steps for optimal results. Customers also share product recommendations with friends through direct communication or social media. They rely on reviews from other users and seek additional information on the product website. A well-designed review app should be user-friendly, easily searchable, and provide age recommendations for use.

DEFINE

Persona

Persona for group 1: Users with no or little experience/knowledge on cosmetics

Persona for group 2: People with knowledge about cosmetics and want to share their experience

Empathy Mapping

User Journey Map

We have mapped customer journey of a user trying to write a cosmetic product’s review with the existing application. It helps us to understand better the paint points from users and recognize potential opportunities to develop the new and better application.

03

IDEATE

A user flow is a route map for the users to navigate from entry point to end point in order to complete a task in the user interface. We ideated below user flows of 2 first keys task in our application.

Information Architecture

We created the information architecture to know how to arrange the parts to be understandable. Organized and structured the content of the application making it easy for the users to find everything they need without much effort.

TAKEAWAYS

Impacts

Many our target users answered that they have become more transparent in cosmetics knowledge and found suitable products for their skin. Almost target users agree that the design of the Coshare app saves a lot of their time with the simple navigation and friendly interface

What I learned?

Throughout the course of conducting this case study, I have gained a wealth of knowledge. Firstly, I have expanded my understanding of the cosmetic industry and gained valuable insights from user research. Secondly, I have come to appreciate that UI design is not the sole factor in creating a successful product. A product must prioritize user experience design in order to effectively serve its users. It is important to always prioritize the needs of the users throughout the product development process. Lastly, working with a team can present both challenges and opportunities. While we encountered disagreements and communication breakdowns, we also learned from each other and developed mutual respect, improvement, and collaboration skills after each misunderstanding.
