One of my UX Case Studies for the UX Design Certificate, taught by Google and taught by Coursera, is Crispy, a mobile app for ordering snacks at the movies. In this project, I'm sole designer, and I perform all phase that's necessary to create a responsive website.
The Crispy app is designed for moviegoers at the Cifi Cinema in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It allows users to conveniently order snacks in advance or from their seats during the movie. The app is aimed at individuals who value time-saving and efficient snack purchasing at the theater.
Moviegoers often worry about missing a film if they spend too long queuing or have to leave their seats to order more food at the cinema
Design a snack ordering app for the cinema to help movie-goers can order snacks before they go to the cinema and also order snacks from the showing room
I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users and improve designs from their pain points. A primary user group identified through research were working adults, officers, and students who have habits to go to the cinema. This user group is the customers of Cifi Cinema and like enjoy movies with snacks. Here are some of the result from the research
I conducted 2 rounds of usability studies. Findings from the first study helped me guide the designs from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed defining.
Before the usability study, the detailed item page does not include the snack preparing time. When conducting the study, most users want to know this info because it can affect their decision. Then, I add it to the page
Before the usability testing, on the check-out page, the payment method item is not easily recognized by only its name, and the applicable vouchers are not clear. After the testing, I have some design solutions for this. For payment method item, I add logo of that method which users recognize it better. For the applicable voucher, I show the amount that will be deducted so that users are easily understand and compare them.
During the usability study, we found some users mistakenly click on the order button but they don't know how to cancel. Finally, I started to add a countdown time to send out orders with a cancel button for users who pay by cash. For users who pay by bank, there will be a popup to input OTP to be safer and make sure users want to order.
Before the usability testing, when users tap back home when they made an order, there is no signal showing that they have a processing order. After that, I add the processing order notification on the bottom with the estimated time to pick up
The app Crispy - snack ordering for the cinema is a true friend for moviegoers, especially working adults and cinema fans that want to save time on ordering and spend more time enjoying their favorite movies.
Quotes from user's feedback “It is very quick and convenient for me to make an order during the showing. Thanks to Crispy, I can enjoy the whole movie with the best experience.”
During the development of the Crispy application, I realized that relying solely on my own ideas would limit its usefulness to only myself. Therefore, I turned to usability studies as a valuable tool for designers to gain insight into users' needs, identify issues, and develop effective solutions. Although my current design may not provide the optimal user experience, I am committed to continuing my research and refining the app to better meet users' needs.
